Do we not support DPMS on VESA? That is quite easy to implement so I'm
 surprised.

 AFAICT, no? Or maybe my display just doesn't support it. Either way, there
 will probably be systems without it, so we need to leave Darkness in.

 Yep, and I think you can even edit it.

A fullscreen presentation mode for giving talks using pdf slides?

 Yep.
