Using the testcase of gawk '{ 0 || 1}', I've narrowed it down to

This is called from mbrlen: gawk-4.1.4/awkgram.y:2864. Debugger doesn't
seem to show global variables, which is a bit annoying, so can't really
see the whole state, such as the value of lexptr =/
