In theory, they are both compatible. I'm using MariaDB (10) on a number of
systems without issues; the defaults are a bit more sane (which might
cause problems when not overridden), and it performs better in a number of
queries (not sure this would affect us).
If the data can be kept the same depends on the actual version --
importing an SQL dump should always work, though.
