Greetings from the top of Hawthorne St! Three out of 4 members of us are
holing up here together (Dan, Rebecca and me) and Noah is isolating with
his roommates in Tujunga, CA, near LA. Both he and Becca will be graduating
this weekend, in virtual commencement ceremonies. Many of you have seen us
walking Ollie, and in virtual meetings during the pandemic quarantine.
(Apologies to those who are getting this a second time--I have overlapping
lists!)
As a brief update, at CHA I was “redeployed” several weeks ago and now am
making calls to COVID patients every several days to help them manage their
symptoms at home. This has been an amazing learning experience. Also, back
in February I started a one day/week job with Refugee and Immigrant
Assistance Center in Boston in my new role as a psychiatric/mental health
NP. We serve mostly Somali and Iraqi clients. All of my work is now doing
telephone visits!
I hope you are managing this time of confinement and anxiety with some
creativity and connection. Here’s my suggestion: be creative and generous
with a portion of the stimulus check you have in your hand (or bank
account), or may soon receive, signed by Donald J. Trump, (don’t get me
started…) and donate some of it to the Elizabeth Stone House. Wilderness
Heals, the hike that raises funds for the Stone House that I’ve
participated in for 7 of the past 10 years, will happen this July. I’ll be
a team leader again this year. The Appalachian Mountain Club, whose huts we
stay in every year over the hike weekend, has just announced the closure of
the huts for the full 2020 season. However, Wilderness Heals will happen in
some form and the Stone House absolutely needs your donations.
This is a time of particular need and urgency for organizations like the
Stone House that support people seeking to escape domestic violence. There
is an uptick in violence when people are confined, have lost jobs, and have
children home from school. Everyone’s stress is palpable. The usual
supports may not be available to women and families experiencing violence:
emergency departments have become places where danger lurks rather than
where help can be found, and it’s harder to seek help from friends and
family members who may be unable to stretch to offer assistance during this
challenging time. The Stone House is there to offer resources and many
kinds of support: shelter, transitional housing, groups for parents and
children and much more.
The money raised by Wilderness Heals provides the Stone House with
unrestricted funds that are especially needed at times like these. In
addition, the Stone House is in the process of building a new facility
which will offer expanded services to more that 2,000 clients and community
members each year. It’s exciting to support this vital organization year
after year. Many of you have taken part in past years.
I realize that some may not be able to offer the same support you have in
the past, but as always, every dollar makes a difference. Please be as
