I've been mixing 2 parts alcohol with 1 part aloe vera gel to get Purell
substitute. Works fine, smells no worse than Purell, and doesn't dry your hands
out the way pure alcohol will.

Denatured alcohol (which is used for various purposes including stripping
paint and burning in some kinds of portable stoves) is mostly ethanol with
additives that make it poisonous to drink. (That allows it to be exempt from
drinking alcohol tax.) In doing a little researchers I've assured myself that
ethanol is both safe and effective for sanitizing our hands (purell-style
sanitizer uses either ethanol or propanol). It is commonly used as a medical
disinfectant.
Johnson's paint in Waltham has it by the gallon or the quart. When I was at
Home Depot last weekend, they also had it, though I don't know if they do
now. If you do go to Johnson's, they want you to call ahead. They deliver to
your car now and don't allow you to go into the store.
