And I just learned from my son Joel that a new military base in Burlington, VT,
which was pushed by all their government representatives because of the jobs
and income it would provide, has military jets flying over with such noise that
it literally shakes the chandeliers in people’s homes. ☹️ Sharon

Hi all,
Carol, thanks for forwarding the email chain to Steve Owens.
Meghan, we can advocate for planes taking off at slower speeds, reinstating
the FAA time limits when planes can take off and land which used to be
limited to something roughly along the lines of no flights between 10:00 pm
and 6:00am, limiting the frequency of flights leaving from runwary L33,
encouraging the manufacture of quieter and more efficient airplanes. I'm not
sure where you are planning to move but airplane noise is an issue in many
parts of the country. Concord, MA, has suffered from airplane traffic noise
from Hanscom Airforce Base for years.

Truly folks, other than sound proofing your home and somehow getting Logan to
reroute planes (when everybody is complaining about noise over their areas
these days), what else can be done? We live in a city, we pay for the
convenience of being close to an airport as well as the convenience of many
other things that pollute our airwaves and oxygen. We can't stop the
development of our cities, as evidenced by the insane amount of construction
happening all over Watertown for the last few years. Cities are meant to be
built up, to house more people, to sell more things to those people. I've
decided to move away from the city next year so I can live a more simple,
clean and quiet life. Perhaps others will get to that point, as well.

Carol,
The process that was put in place after that 2017 article resulted in no
change -- any pause in airplane noise over us was due to the pandemic, not
any action on the FAA or Massport. It's a long story, but the short version
is that every potential change that the MassportCAC in consultation with
folks from MIT proposed, the FAA rejected.
More recently, the FAA/Massport came back with one potential compromise that
did nothing to help residents, and merely moved the noise slightly. The
MassportCAC rejected that and told the FAA to go back the the drawing board.
I sent a letter signed by some of my colleagues representing Cambridge,
Medford & Somerville asking the FAA to explain to us how they are going to
move forward with the MassportCAC's request. Their response was that they
had no plans to do so (in so many words).
This past week, I escalated this back up to Katherine Clark's office and I've
got a meeting with them coming up in the next few days.

Dear Will and Steve,
I’m forwarding a recent thread from our local neighbors list (truly local,
not from Nextdoor!) regarding airplane noise in our part of Watertown. In
recent weeks the frequency has increased to levels I haven’t experienced for
a while now. At times it’s virtually constant. I know that Will and Jon
tried—and succeeded, I believe—to get us some relief from this, and I’d
appreciate any insight you can share about causes and potential remedies.

This morning’s relentless noise adds credence to the cloudy weather theory.
For a time I was phoning the complaint number regularly, as David and I
noticed that the noise was loud enough to wake us up even with the windows
closed, and to make conversation impossible outdoors. Over time I have lost
faith that our phone calls make any difference.

There used to be some relationship with weather—the direction planes had to
fly out of Boston regardless of where going. As i recall, cloudy weather
sent them over us. Who knows the reasons now. There have been committees for
decades. Definitely call if you notice a difference ( I havent, but rarely
have. Poor hearing? Kids loved seeing them). Tell our Reps also. They are
responsive and may have info.

It's because of the "gentrification" happening near the airport.... They
didn't care so much about the noise they caused when poor people lived
there but now that money is moving in, and they're all complaining too,
they have to reroute some of the planes over other neighborhoods.
