I do want to follow through re: your request for tulip advice.
I would start fresh with full-sized bulbs, which can be ordered online now for
the best selection — my favorite site is www.johnscheepers.com. The tulips will
be delivered in October, when the ground is cool enough for planting. The
“Darwin” style of tulip is most likely to come back for a number of years. As
Susan suggested, plant them deeply, 6” to 8”. Spread Bulbtone over the top, not
in the planting hole. When they appear in the spring, spread Bulbtone again —
and then a third time as the foliage is dying after blooming is finished. As
with daffodils, you can deadhead the flowers, but you have to leave the foliage
alone until it is dead enough to pull out easily when you give it a soft tug.
Interplanting with daylilies or other perennials will keep it from looking
messy.
More and more I am filling my garden with native plants that need no
fertilizing or other pampering — but the high-maintenance tulips and roses are
so thrilling, I can’t imagine spring or June without them!
