Thanks Joel for sharing this op Ed by Michelle Wu. At your suggestion I
sent this note and a link to the story about our block party to the staff
person in charge of civic engagement.
My neighbors suggested I send Michelle this story after reading her Boston
Globe Op-Ed on May 30. We really related. Great food, multigenerational
connections, conviviality, and a brass band on May 18...how's that for a
recipe for a terrific block party. This very local and very powerful form of
civic engagement reconnected us with each other after an interminably dreary
spring and mind numbing headlines. It reminded us that we're door to door
neighbors and no matter politics, race, and religion, we can count on each
other when it counts.
We are living proof of the power of block parties to pull together the
threads in the special quilt called our neighborhood.
