I have not tested them with Vista myself and think they store some files
in places Vista security does not like. Specifically, I have heard that
Vista does not like user configuration files stored in the C:\Program
Files tree -- only non-changing program files there. TextPal and
FileDir currently store their .ini files in the same directory as the
program. This may actually not be a problem because I have also heard
that Vista automatically reroutes certain paths so that older Windows
programs will be compatible.
Another problem is that Vista security asks for permission for COM
servers to be accessed, which these applications both use in some
of their commands. That may be a one-time question -- I'm not
sure.
I would guess that FileDir is likely to have less compatibility
problems because it is built with C#, a .NET-based language by
Microsoft (TextPal is developed with Ruby).
Some users have tried these programs on Vista with initial, mixed results.
I'm unclear whether they were able to work out the issues satisfactorily
or not. I do not have a Vista computer yet. I welcome any reports from
people who want to try TextPal or FileDir on Vista.
