Julia, I hadn't heard about the need to be aggressive as a requirement for Shepherds in Germany. With our city streets and uncivilization in many countries becoming more unsafe, perhaps a little secretive aggressiveness could come in handy, especially for women's protection. Doug: want a certain clear path when out with your dog, Substitute the word "kill" for the command "forward. . ----- Original Message ----- From: J Kimbell To: guidedogchat@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Saturday, February 02, 2002 9:15 PM Subject: [guidedogchat] Re: Labs - Re: Re: Hi all, I think you are probably right about the first. Some of these dogs dont even look like them, do they? And as for GS's, its the same in the UK, I've seen some show ones and they look awful, they have very arched backs and are very thin, so add spinal problems to your list too. As I understand it, unl;ess its now changed, but to regester a GS in Germany it has to prove its ability to attack. Its what I've read, but this may have changed now. It was some years ago I read tyhis, the book in question said its not good to have a GS for a pet with close German descendants. If this has now changed then my apologies. Which here in the UK, would rule them out as guide dogs. There was a bit stink here a few years back about the health issues among some breeds the GS included among them and the Kennel Clubb got a lot of flak as a result, so breeders got told to clean up their act as it were andimprove on this, but it will obviously take some time to breed away from what they've done to some dogs. Thinking about the decrease in Shepherd use, that breed in north America has been largely ruined by breeding for looks, resulting in what I am told by a couple of veterinarians are above occurrences of digestive problems, skin issues, hip problems, as well as temperament issues. Apparently, some dog guide schools have negotiated breeding stock from Germany which is why Shepherd choices are increasing compared to say, 10-15 years ago. I know a Lowchen who thinks she is ever such a big dog and rough houses with Wren who is probably 4 times her size if not more!! If they are allowed to be dogs they arent all bad, but most are not. I know of a few exceptions, like a friend who has one of those rats on a leash, a real little sweety, well behaved. One good lick from my former dog guide Payton, 55 pounds of attitude, and that poor little creature was wet all over. Little creature didn't seem to mind at all. This one was my best friends guide dog and she was just one of the best Shepherds That I know. As a kid our family had a shepherd for a very short time our family had been broken into and my grandfather decided that we neded a shepherd to stay out side and be a gard dog and he bit a childfrom next door and it was gone the very next day. It left me as a 10 year old child scared of big dogs. Yes I have grown out of it but big dogs do scare me sometimes. I've also met quite a few Shepherds who have a slower than usual walk and yes, even pull (or not) appropriate for the needs of their partners. I recall one in particular, a dog named Lou, just a totally sweet little creature of 55 pounds. Due to a couple of days where my roommate had foot/diabetes issues, I took Lou out to park and actually had to checked the leash to make certain he was still around. He was quite the little rowdy when loose and not on duty; he and my dog, a yellow lab named Iggy, had great play times together, officially unknown by TSI. I enjoy walking with a guide dog and I just take longer to get places. When I use a cane I even walk very slow. I enjoy Hawk to the fullest he shows me a little things that help me not fall and hurt myself. I have dislocating knee caps and hitting cracks the wrong way puts me down and knee pops out. I know that there is faster black labs but guide dogs schools work with me and helps me find the best dog for me. My dogs don’t work maybe as long but I have found they work hard and care about my life and that gives me joy. I've had one Shepherd, two yeller labs, a black lab, and a retriever. None were in any way slow dogs which was a good thing since I often like to walk at almost a jogging speed. I have only had two labs, so I guess I am not a lab person. Yes, they are chow hounds, and inhale their food. I had to save a lab one time, I had a small roast on the cabinet, and I heard the dog making funny noises, I went to the kitchen and he was trying to inhale the roast, not successfully. I ripped the roast out of this throat and threw it away.
