well Malcolm, in answer to your question about school dinners we had our own kitchen at the primary school and all meals were cooked on the site fresh every day, there were about 200 kids and several staff to cater for and meals were done for the old folks home which was next to the school, we had a choice of 2 meat dishes and also a choice of veg and potato dishes, also both a hot or cold pudding, we had the menu to take home on friday so that our parents helped us to choose and we gave it to the kitchen ladies on the monday so that they had time to get the meals ready, we had 8kids per dining table and were of mixed ages, the older kids had to put glasses of water and help the younger kids to the loo if needed, when all of the food was eaten we had to stack the chairs and take the little ones out to play, this was the same routine for the kids who had sandwiches so that we all got to mix and taught us to be calm and helpful to both other kids and to the dining room staff, our teachers had their own table in the large hall so could keep an eye on things, the hall was used for everything , assembly, games, dancing, choir and music practice , it was beautifully decorated for christmas and our nativity shows, our teachers put on a show for us kids which was usually a musical or a panto and they used to send themselves up with silly costumes and dances, in the 2 classes of the 5 and 6 year olds we all had a chance to mix the christmas pudding and mince pie mix before taking it to the kitchen for our seasonal lunches, it was a very imaginative and magical time for us small ones, my own 3 kids went to the same primary school and it struck me as although the buildings hadn't changed much it all seemed so much smaller now that I was a mum, luckily I enjoyed my time there and it didn't seem like hard work as learning was fun and we also had a class garden and lots of nature trails so outdoor learning was special, we also did cookery and music lessons which is where I started piano lessons and sang in the choir, happy days, luckily my kids and now the grandkids like lessons and as usual Steve and I gave them books and musical things for christmas, all of which they liked, apart from the 2 youngest who aren't at school yet they all sing and play instruments so who knows there may be a star in the making, keep you posted on progress ha ha, Vanessa the Saints reporter x x
