On This Day: Friday May 18, 2012 This is the 139th day of the year, with 227 days remaining in 2012. Fact of the Day: doughnuts Doughnuts were first made in the US around the beginning of the 19th century, when they were also called oly-cooks (the word coming from Dutch oliekoek "oilcake", a clue to the Dutch origins of the doughnut). Then they were simply small dumplings. The development of the ring-shaped doughnut came much later in that century. The word is an allusion to the small, rounded shape of the original doughnuts; the element -nut is used similarly in "gingernut" and its now obsolete synonym "spicenut".
