It is tragic and obviously somewhere along the line these children were
unaccounted for and no one came looking for them. Public schools provide that
safety net when there is no DFACS case or other agency involved. That needs to
be the message.I agree that, without vilifying homeschoolers, lawmakers need
to put some kind of process in place to account for children that is triggered
by a withdrawal to homeschool.

I would also like to do some open records requests to GaDOE to get the most
recent withdrawal reason reported by GCA on these two children, whether the
parents filed a letter of intent to homeschool at any point, and what the DOE
and State of Georgia’s current procedures are with regard to follow-up when
parents cease to submit annual declarations of intent or complete the
required standardized testing. I think I already know the answer which is
that the law doesn’t allow for any follow-up. I would like to have all of
that in writing, though, before I draft anything. I suspect that the children
were probably withdrawn to home school by GCA, in which case no one did
anything but follow the law. I am hoping there wasn’t an unknown withdrawal
on their end with no follow up.

This story out of my hometown and the system I worked in for many years is
absolutely horrifying. Since the news broke yesterday I have been so ANGRY
that our current system of online school options and homeschooling with
virtually no requirements has left us in education with no safety net for
children. A child was buried in the back yard for up to 2 years and another
for up to 3 months and NO ONE KNEW (other than those responsible). According
to GUIDE, both were withdrawn to GCA.
I don’t want our friends at GCA to be angry with us, but something has to
change. Local districts (or DFACS) need some funded means of tracking the
kids in our community in these programs and putting our eyes on them
periodically!
I know this is controversial, but wondering if we can take this up as an
issue on the advocacy committee? At a minimum maybe we can talk to our user
base about asking law enforcement to do welfare checks anytime someone is
withdrawn to do homeschooling and the situation seems concerning?
