Hello Samuel,

Currently Greenstone is not supported on 64-bit machines and the Greenstone you have installed is a 32-bit version. The problem is that the Expat.so included with Greenstone is 32-bit and the Perl loader is looking for a 64-bit version. To fix this you will need to run:

yum install perl-XML-Parser.x86_64

as the root user on the server machine.

Hope this helps,
Sam of the Greenstone Team

Don't foget that the linux machine I am currently using is a 64-bit Centos server. And let you know that I have installed and used Greenstone on the same OS (CentOS) but with a 32-bit machine.
please, I am waiting for more help from you and other users in the list.

Hi Samuel,
This is Yohannes (AmharicJust do the following on the Greenstone Linux
Server
1) Go to the Greenstone installation folder:
/Greenstone/perllib/cpan/perl-5.8
2) Then remove the two folders: XML and Auto
3) Now try your remote GLI.
I'm assuming you have already seen the remote gli guideline. If you can'tt succeeded, please let me know I can help. Here we are using remote gli on

...An error has occured on the remote Greenstone server while performing

And more lines that complain about Perl
The perl version I have in the Linux/CentOS box is V5.8.8.
Can any one, please, help me on this issue?

Hi

Where did you install Greenstone? 2.83 cannot be installed in a place with spaces or brackets () in it. eg Program Files is no good.

If you have used a path like this, please try reinstalling  into eg C:\Greenstone.

Are you 32 or 64 bit windows?

Katherine

Hi,

I just downloaded and installed Greenstone on my computer (Windows 7).

I can connect to the localhost.

Why I try to start Greenstone, by clicking on Start-> Programs -> Greenstone -> Librarian Interface (GLI), I just see a black screen for several seconds.

That’s all.

Is it possible to use Greenstone with Windows 7?

Do I have to change some configurations ?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Please try going to "Control Panel" --> "System" --> "Advanced system settings" --> "Environment Variables", look through the system variables and if JAVA_HOME does not exist then click "New...", in "Variable name" type JAVA_HOME and in "Variable value" type the path to your Java installation (e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jre6). If the JAVA_HOME system variable already exists then make sure it points to a valid Java installation.

Also, please note that Greenstone is not yet officially supported on 64-bit Windows so there is likely that you will encounter more problems even if the above fix works.

I work for the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, a non-profit in Chicago, IL, USA.

I installed Greenstone Digital Library software on a Windows 7 machine. The GLI does not work. It cannot find the JAVA runtime environment which is installed in the folder c:\Program Files (x86)\java. How can I customize the GLI.bat file so I can point to the correct Java folder? The search4j.exe is unable to find the Java files and the GLI.bat fails everytime. I have the lates Java runtime from Sun. Let me know other pointers I could use to fix this problem.

Hi Mark,

The problem you are experiencing is because of the brackets in your file path. Up until we tested Greenstone on a 64-bit machine - where 32-bit programs are stored in Program Files (x86) - we had not encountered file paths with brackets before. It turns out that the Windows scripting language (.bat files, like what is used to run GLI on Windows) handles brackets in a way that we did not anticipate. We are working on fixing this issue for the 2.84 release of Greenstone, in the meantime however I would suggest installing Greenstone into a folder without any brackets or spaces in its path (for example, C:\Greenstone). Also, if you're using a 64-bit machine please note that Greenstone is not yet officially supported for 64-bit operating systems and it is possible you will encounter other problems if this is the case.

Hope this helps,
Sam of the Greenstone Team

All,
In installed java jdk on this server, and then installed Greenstone version 2.81 for Windows (32). I can launch Greenstone in the browser, but I am unable to launch the GLI. I gave myself FULL permissions over the Greenstone folder, files, and subfolders. When I try to launch the GLI either from the start menu or a command prompt, it tries to launch but fails. Error message is below. "Perl:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Greenstone\bin\windows\perl\bin
\Greenstone\bin\windows\search4j.exe was unexpected at this time." Is this an error that is documented? Any idea how to correct this? Mark Sullivan

Hi

Please try setting JAVA_HOME environment variable (to  C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_17). Then start GLI from a command prompt - run gli.bat from the /greenstone/gli directory.

What error messages do you get?

Katherine

Hello,

I have tried to install Greenstone 2.83 in my Windows 7 (64-bit) machine, but I could not get them working. Please give me some suggestions.

I was installing Greenstone 2 by right clicking on the downloaded file and running it as administrator. I tried to install it in both C:\Program Files\Greenstone and C:\Program Files (x86)\Greenstone on separate occasions. (Uninstall and install)

I set the Java in the Path environment. (C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jdk1.6.0_17\bin)

Then, I add the full control to Users for the Greenstone installation directory.

The result is:

 - I can open the Greenstone web server. It is fine. I also can use it with the external Apache HTTP Server.
-  HOWEVER, I cannot open the Librarian Interface. I have tried many approaches, but I still cannot open it. What do I need to do more?

Do I need to install Perl like Active Perl and add it to the Path environment?

Thank you very much.
A newbie on Greenstone.
