Thanks, Mike -----Original Message----- From: Mike Maculley [mailto:maculley@xxxxxxx] Sent: Wednesday, August 31, 2005 8:53 PM To: gpsbug-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: 10 Minute rule Fellow sailors, Susan was acting as the voice of the Anam Cara crew when she called for the enforcement, or clarification of, the 10 minute rule. We were all under the impression that engines must be off 10 minutes prior to the race start. This subject was broached last year when the Alexis was admonished for running her engine in this time frame, John, you were out of town for that race (I think it was the third spring race). I have been unable to locate the e-mail that was distributed in that regard, or even remember who posted it, but that is the rule the Anam Cara has followed for all subsequent races, in one race even missing a start for it. The key to sportsmanship is to know the rules, and I as the skipper of the Anam Cara, have demonstrated an ignorance of the rules, and for that I apologize. The engine can indeed be used up until the preparatory horn, which is 5 minutes before the race. I seem to have had the prep and warning horns confused as well. My ignorance of the rules can be contributed to a lack of experience, as this is only my second season racing. Please try to bear with me as I learn. I agree with George Christian in that racing should be fun, and I apologize to anyone who feels that I have betrayed that aspect of the sport. Kindest Regards Mike Maculley S/V Anam Cara -----Original Message----- From: j.wandling@xxxxxxxxxxx To: Tomes, Susan Sent: 8/29/2005 8:55 AM Subject: Ah...youth seeking justice Susan, In the manner of youth seeking justice, you seemed to have betrayed an ignorance of the racing rules, impugned the integrity of your "fellow sailors", and pissed of George Christian, at least. Anyway, section 4 (of the rules of racing) covers things pretty well so I have never seen the need for any other kind of "club rule". So I don't know where that comes from. Anyway, you might consider sending out an apology. I think a mercy plea based on youth and good intentions would work. See ya. John
