Tranquillity, skippered by Tom Orlowski, got some "real" racing experience.
Takes fourth place in 120 mile race from Annapolis to Hampton. Tom and crew of
Mike Orlowski, John Wandling, Chuck Wandling, and Paul Whitener sailed 36 hours
non-stop from Friday morning to Saturday afternoon in this revival of the "Down
the Bay" race sponsored by the Hampton Yacht Club and the Storm Trysail Club.
Sailing the boat close-hauled in wind conditions ranging from 5 to 20 knots was
a challenging but satisfying activity. Tom and crew did a great job of
representing us "River" sailors. This is a revival of an annual series and
will be scheduled again around this time next year. It is a great chance to
cruise up to Annapolis, enjoy one of the coolest sailing spots in the world,
and participate in what usually turns out to be a fun challenge for sailors.
Recreational highlights included a couple of shows by the Navy Blue Angels, an
after dark pyrotechnic show by some sky divers over Pax river, and a close look
at Donneybrook, a Farr 72 that beat everyone by about twelve hours. We are all
going to save our pennies!
