Hello Steve,
Well I looked into the issue about UK Pub's not being classified under
Alcohol Establishment but under Restaurant / Cafe and the problem is part
TeleAtlas and part Sendero.
TeleAtlas classifies Café/Pub with a main category of 9376, Café's have
subcategory of 002, and Pubs have a sub category of 003. The problem is
none of the pub's are classified with a sub-category of 003, but are
classified as 001 which is "Unknown"/"Not Specified".
So the problem on TeleAtlas side is all these Pubs are "Unknown" and not
"Pubs" and the problem on Sendero side is we mistakenly put the 001/Unknown
under Restaurant/Café instead of just Restaurant. This will be fixed with
the next map/poi release, unless you all think we should keep it in the Café
sub-category and instead rename Café to be Café/Pub but I am not sure this
will help since we also have the Alcohol Category which sounds like its
pretty useless in the UK.
So the best thing for now is if you want to find a Pub, your best bet is to
search in Restaurant and sub-category of Café.

I have just returned from a short break on the English South Coast.
Generally the Sendero system acquitted itself pretty well.
We found a good place to stop on the way down. A nice pub just off the M25
which we would not have known about without Sendero. Against that we were
sent on a couple of wild goose chases after places that did not appear to
exist. The consistency and quality of the POI data continues to make me
wonder. I found one motor repair place that was listed under at least five
different names. There are only five alcohol establishments within 40 miles
of Hastings (we were looking for a winery). The only places listed were wine
shops and a couple of off-licences. Every single public house appears to be
categorised under Restaurant, most have a subcategory of Cafe. One
restaurant/cafe I declined to try was Hastings Buklding Services which got
in there somehow.
I can confirm that there are no churches in the whole of the UK apart from
the odd one that gets itself listed as a tourist attraction. I wish I could
think of some way of getting matters improved but Tele Atlass seem to be too
big to take much notice of individuals. I was hoping that with productgs
like Tomtom using the same maps things would improve but most Tomtom systems
do not seem to make a great deal of use of POI data and certainly not in the
same way that we users of Sendero do.
The postcode facility appears to work really well. We were able to find a
couple of places using their postcodes.
