John,

The earthmate is smaller, and has a much faster cold start time than the
magellan.  I believe, but am not sure about exactly which model of the
magellan was being used, that it may be more accurate as well.  It
certainly claims to be more accurate under unusual conditions where
you're constantly aquiring and then losing the satellite signal (urban
canyons).  It has WAAS, which in north america can be used to reduce the
error rate down to less than 3 meters, while I *think* the magellan does
not (which would leave it with an error rate of about 15 meters).

The Magellan does have a screen display, so your sighted wife may find
some use for it, but I'm not sure about what capabilities it may have re
the purchasing and loading of maps.  At a minimum it will display to her
her latitude and longitude.
