Good theory; but I'm afraid that's not how WAAS works. It doesn't get any positional information from WAAS; what it gets may better be thought of as hints; the hints say hey GPS receivers in the area of Chicago; right now things are a little odd there so change your calculations by X amount to come up with a better position.=20 Its not just the number of satellites you see at the moment that effect your positional fix; it's how they are lined up relative to one another; and what other electrical activity is taking place nearby. If there's some source of RFI; that may do more than anything else to impeed you from aquiring a fix. Or it could be that the satellite you need is just behind that tree or house at the moment. When I first got my gps-talk on the laptop we had all kinds of goofy signals out of that thing and I thought it wouldn't track in cloudy weather but, with the Braille Note and the Trekker, tthis has not been the case. I have had the unexplainable experience of being out on a warm sunny day with no clouds anywhere and the gps reading poor, 3 satellites and maybe 3 days later just as the skies were about to burst with rain having that same receiver give me a very good, 8 satellites reading. I would imagine it depends more upon where those little satellites are in relationship to where we are, and the time of day that dictates the readings we get. Perhaps, and Mike can clarify, perhaps this is why they have switched to the receivers with the Waas readings so the receivers would have at least 2 stationary satellites from which to pick up a signal.
