I've always wondered how that process worked. Thanks for taking the time to explain it, Charles. -----Original Message----- From: gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:gps-talkusers-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Charles La Pierre Sent: Wednesday, March 01, 2006 10:01 AM To: gps-talkusers@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [gps-talkusers] Re: Australian maps Hello Jason, I just want to set your expectations correctly. Once we get the maps, since this is a bran new map which we never had before, there is the added complexity of converting that new map into the Telcontar's Richmap format. To do that we need to obtain a filter from Telcontar for the new map. If they don't have a filter for the map this is a problem and could really delay things. The Telcontar's Richmap format is what our maps are converted into, and we license the Richmap engine from Telcontar, and that engine runs on the BrailleNote which gives us access to the map data and also has the route finding algorithms we use to create pedestrian and vehicle routes. Typically when a new map comes out it takes Telcontar 1 month to update their filter, and then Sendero gets this filter and we start processing the maps, which takes anywhere from a few days to a few weeks depending on how many maps we are updating. Then we need to test the new maps and that takes another few weeks. So for example lets say our map company TeleAtlas comes out with new USA maps on January 1. Here is the earliest Sendero will have those maps available to our users. Jan 1 TeleAtlas releases USA Maps Feb 1 Telcontar releases Filter Feb 3 Sendero gets Filter (2 days for paperwork etc.) Feb 18 Sendero releases maps to Beta Testers. Mar 1 Sendero finally has maps ready to be burnt onto CD's etc. So as you can see its about 2 months from when the maps are released from the map company to when Sendero could actually have a release, and that is assuming there is no issues along the way. Now when you are talking about a bran new map for a Country we have never had before, well it all depends on when Telcontar will create a new filter for that map. We have no control over that. Once the filter has been created and sent to us then a multi month process begins for us of converting the maps and then heavy testing of this bran new country. I hope you understand how difficult this whole process is and if anything gets delayed the whole process backs up and can delay the release to our end users by many many months. Now saying that, I am happy to announce that we are about to begin testing of the latest USA and Canadian maps. I finally got the updated filter for the European maps and will start to generate new European maps tomorrow, which hopefully will go out to our testers soon. Please be patient but realistically I don't see the Australian maps available for you all until the fall at the earliest. Sorry to be a downer, but I would rather be up-front and let you all know the situation, instead of stringing you along. I hope you can appreciate that. Sincerely Charles.
