Check what is selected under MIDI Output under the Hear menu. Microsoft Wavetable should probably be selected. Also, in the Windows Volume Control, the volume of JAWS is controlled with a control called 'Wave' but the MIDI player is controlled with something called 'SW Synth' so maybe that is turned down.
