Minor correction: I gave the link of http://www.dancingdots.com/tsgf3/Movies.htm for SharpEye. It is actually for our page that has some brief online movies showing how to scan and correct music using SharpEye. There is a script for blind users to read but these movies are definitely much more helpful to sighted people. See http://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/sharpeye.htm for details and to order online. For SharpEye. I am happy to hear that your initial experience with GOODFEEL and related products has been positive. I'll answer your questions using your numbering: 1. No, there's no SharpEye for the MAC. Maybe your friend could run Windows on her Mac if she has one of those new ones that are based on Intel technology and get her own copy of SharpEye. http://www.dancingdots.com/tsgf3/Movies.htm 2. SharpEye is OCR software for music. What you will need is help with correcting SharpEye's interpretation of the image and not the image itself. Some other ideas: Your friend could acquire something like Finale or Sibelius which are two mainstream music programs which run on the Mac. Both of them come with optional scanning features. She could scan and make any corrections using one of those programs. Then she could export as MusicXML. At this stage, we would recommend Finale's MusicXML export feature over that of Sibelius. It loses less data in the translation. The Sibelius MusicXML export feature is an extra cost and the Finale MusicXML feature is part of the program. Again, although you will definitely be able to import into Lime the MusicXML from either of these programs and get the correct notes and rhythms, sooner or later some details of the score will not get translated. For example, there might be a rehearsal marker of letter "J". You know, the conductor says: "OK, everyone, let's start at letter J." Those rehearsal markers don't get saved to the MusicXML export. So for those items or anything else that's important to be in the braille score, someone must use Lime to enter them back into the score before transcribing it with GOODFEEL. In the case of markers, you just move to the measure that needs the marker and go to Annotations | Text Category | Rehearsal, type in the letter or number required and press ESCAPE. The good news is that there is a Mac version of Lime and Lime files created on the Mac can be opened by your Windows version of Lime. Alternatively, you might experiment with something like GoToMyPC and allow your friend to connect directly to your machine and use SharpEye to make the necessary corrections. GoToMyPC is a subscription-based service that costs $20 per month or so. There may be no-cost alternatives. Maybe others here will have some ideas. 3. Tapping into some kind of community-based or church-based volunteer network has worked for many of our blind GOODFEEL users. Again, we do sell individual licenses of SharpEye. See http://www.dancingdots.com/prodesc/sharpeye.htm for details and to order online. Thanks for posting these good questions to our list. I am sure this information will be of interest to a number of subscribers. I am thrilled with the things it has already been able to allow me to do. I have brailled my first music and have committed much of it to memory. (its an easy piece). My biggest obstacle aside from the learning curve to use it at all is the sporadic availability of sighted assistance. Counting the time spent with the demo and now the fully functional version, I have had a total of 4 sessions with help of three different people. The learning curve is steep. The person who seems most willing to commit time for helping me is a Macintosh computer user and lives about 20 miles away. Getting together is a problem. 1. Is there an equivalent scanning software for sighted people that runs on Macintosh and can convert scanned music to niff format? Is there a web site that I could check out? 2. Is it workable for me to scan music into a .tif document and join multiple sheets together after converting it to music and then sending the combined file without corrections to my friend? I am thinking that she can make the corrections from her house more easily than coming here and I can do the work of converting to Lime and then GoodFeel myself. 3. My next option is to contact the schools in this area and see if the music teachers can find a student willing to give me some help, possibly making it some kind of an extra school project. What are some ways that the rest of you have solved the reader availability problem? Thanks for any and all suggestions.
