mation on the rights holder or agent with your proposals=2E You do not ha=
ve to attain rights prior to submitting=2C but you should know where to w=

Notes for those considering directing a GMU Players Studio Production=3A

Studio productions are student driven projects that have extremely wide c=
reative latitude both in the selection of material and the approach to pr=
oduction=2E Balanced against this desire for creative expression is the =
reality of the limited resources of time=2C space=2C people (both student=
s and faculty/staff) to support these shows=2E Therefore=2C the intentio=
n is that these projects be seen primarily as a directing and performance=
venue with simplified or minimal production support=2E In general this =
is more successful when the material chosen is smaller in scale=2C both i=
n terms of cast=2C and in terms of physical production=2E

Based on past experiences=2C the following guidelines are set forth to av=
oid the more common problems=2C which have arisen=2E

1) The Director is the producer of the project and is responsible for rec=
ruiting the stage manager=2C the Designers=2C crew as needed=2C coordinat=
ing the event with faculty and staff=2C and staying on budget=2E A techi=
e cattle call will occur prior to proposal due dates to ensure that direc=
tors have the names of potential crew and design team members=2E

2) Budget=3A cost of rights=2C scripts=2C and =24100 for publicity and sh=
ow expenses=2E

3) Cast and Crew=3A any GMU student enrolled during the semester of the p=
roduction with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2=2E0 as of the semester prior=
to the production=2E Eligibility of students is to be verified with the=
ater faculty=2E Cast eligibility will be verified before the cast list i=
s posted=2E =

4) Schedule=3A Rehearsal space may be arranged through the theater offic=
e=2E Access to the Black Box is the Monday before the performance weeken=
d=2E Availability of the Black Box during this week depends on class sch=
edules=2E Rehearsals end at 11pm with production meetings=2C work notes=2C=
etc=2E finished by 12 midnight=2E No physical work is to continue past =
midnight=2E

5) Technical Director=3A The director may recruit a Technical Director to=
coordinate the physical production of the project=2E The director maint=
ains the responsibility of keeping the project within the parameters of t=
he available resources=2E

6) The director and/or the Technical Director may recruit designers for t=
he project=2C or may perform these duties themselves=2E Director should =
consider the limited time for load-in=2C light hang=2C focus=2C and techn=
ical rehearsals in the selection of material and the consideration of des=
ign concepts=2E Designs must be reviewed by the faculty and/or professio=
nal staff before execution may begin=2E

7) Use of shop spaces and equipment not dedicated to the Black Box must b=
e coordinated with faculty and professional staff=2E Access to costume s=
tock must be coordinated with the Costume Shop Manager=2E Borrowed costu=
mes must be cleaned and returned within one week of closing=2E The Direc=
tor is ultimately responsibly for ensuring that all costumes are returned=
 to stock=2E

8) The primary use of the Black Box is a performance classroom=2E The sc=
enic units must either A) Leave the floor largely clear and accessible or=
 B) be struck each evening=2E Borderline situations will be reviewed on =
a case by case situation=2E

9) The show must be struck after the final performance=2E All elements=
must be removed unless prior arrangements have been made=2E

10) Student-written plays or adaptations are acceptable=2C but must be =
submitted in full by the said proposal deadline=2E
