The Center for the Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED) at Virginia
Tech's College of Engineering is seeking to increase the numbers of students
from under-represented groups who pursue and earn engineering degrees. I am
writing to you in hopes that you will help get the word out to your students
about some of the pre-college engineering programs for middle to high school
students offered at Virginia Tech.
School Year Events:
<https://www.eng.vt.edu/rise> RISE (Recruiting Initiative for Student
Engineering) has two events this spring for high school students interested
in engineering:
* Sophomores are invited to attend a tailgate picnic and the spring
football game on Saturday, April 14, 2018. The visit includes an engineering
lab tour and a hands on activity at the

InVenTs studio. The deadline for application is March 12, 2018.
* Juniors are invited to the VT campus on Sunday, April 8 where they
will take part in an evening orientation program and then attend the

Engineering Open House on Monday, April 9. The visitors and their chaperones
will be provided with meals and lodging at a local hotel. The deadline for
application is March 12, 2018.
* Free Bus transportation is provided from the following locations
for both events:

* James River Bus lines, Richmond, Virginia
* Woodbridge, Virginia

PCI is co-sponsored by Virginia Tech's <http://adancy24.wixsite.com/nsbe>
National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and the Center for the
Enhancement of Engineering Diversity (CEED), with the goal of increasing the
number of African American students who are prepared to enter college,
ideally majoring in engineering, math, science, and other technical
disciplines. The program consists of a series of five daylong events held on
Saturdays over the course of the academic year. Activities include lab
tours, demonstrations, hands on activities and presentations designed to
help students prepare for the college application process. Dates for the
spring semester are February 17, March 17 and April 14, 2018. There is a

Summer Camps:

Imagination, a one-week science and math camp for rising seventh and eighth
graders, introduces participants to the exciting and fun world of
technology, engineering, and science ... not by watching, but by doing! The
camp will be held July 23 - 27. Free bus transportation is provided to and
from Roanoke. Cost is $150, but scholarships are available. While this is a
day camp, we have students who stay with friends and family, rent/share
hotel rooms or Airbnb, stay in RV's and even camp! The deadline for
application is April 27, 2018.

and Technology)
A dynamic three-day residential summer experience on the campuses of
Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, and the University of Virginia for
rising 9th and 10th graders living in Virginia. Through innovative hands-on
experiences taught by faculty members and staff, students will explore the
fun and excitement of STEM while residing on a college campus. BLAST is
geared to students who may have an interest in or an underlying aptitude for
STEM academics, but have not yet discovered the excitement of STEM. The
Virginia Tech session is July 15 - 18. There is no cost to attend, but
participants must supply their own transportation to and from Blacksburg.
Online application deadline is February 5, 2018.
<http://www.eng.vt.edu/ctech2> C-Tech2 (Computers and Technology at
Virginia Tech) is a two week residential program held June 24 - July 7,
2018. It is designed to develop and sustain the interests of women in
engineering. Students spend the majority of their time involved in hands-on
activities designed to increase their interest in and knowledge of
applications of engineering to real world situations. The target population
for the program is rising junior and senior high school girls. The deadline
for application is March 26, 2018. Full and partial scholarships are
available based on financial need. Potential applicants should not allow
program costs to affect their decision to apply.
