The summer 2021 internship program will be virtual. If the EPA headquarters
buildings re-open fully we’ll revisit the issue of virtual vs in-person. We
cannot pay the interns, but we can supervise their work for course credit. We
request a minimum commitment of 10 hours a week and a max of 40 hours.

Internship Information
The US Environmental Protection Agency, a major federal regulatory agency, is
looking for intern help at its Office of Public Affairs in Washington, DC.
The intern, a registered college or university student, will primarily assist a
small but motivated team of media relations officers who field media inquiries
and interview requests on a number of highly visible environmental policy
issues and areas. These include but are not limited to: climate change;
environmental justice; clean water; pesticides and toxic chemicals; and
fracking. The intern might also work on special projects or in other parts of
the Office of Public Affairs as assistance is needed.
Final intern assignments get made at the start of the internship. Such
assignments could include helping the Media Relations office by: Monitoring,
and compiling lists of, media coverage of agency policy; and listening in to,
as well as taking notes during, media interviews with agency officials and
staff. They can, on occasion, assist in crafting media outreach efforts and
communication plans. Interns might also work with the Office of Internal
Communications in creating and archiving the office’s weekly content. Further,
interns might work on special assignments with other offices in EPA such as the
Office of Congressional and Intergovernmental Relations.
Interested interns will ideally combine academic interest in environmental
science and in media/mass communications. Other desirable but not required
skills include:
• Strong writing and organizational skills
• Interest in public affairs or internal communications
• Strong understanding of new and social media.
US EPA usually requests semester-long commitments. The agency offers
Monday-Friday <x-apple-data-detectors://2> work week schedules of up to 40
hours, although it is happy to accommodate interns’ schedules if they have
classes or are enrolled in programs like The Washington Center as long as the
intern can commit to a minimum of ten hours of work a week.
