DUTIES:

Serves as a NASA's Pathways Intern Employment (IEP) Program student located in 
the Research Directorate. Participant completes assigned duties, tasks, 
readings, and developmental activities specified in the program.

The student will be located in a branch performing in the areas of Optical / 
Electrical Engineering or Physics. The research involves the study of active 
and passive Infrared, optical and ultraviolet signal interaction with the 
atmosphere. The goal of this research is in the identification of hazards to 
aircraft in NASA's Aviation Safety Program or for Science missions in the study 
of the Earth's climate.

The student will develop radiative transfer models especially in the 
ultraviolet. These models are applied to atmospheric characterizations for 
hazard detection in Aviation Safety. The tasks would involve modification of 
Matlab or other codes to run on multi-processor PC computers.

The student will improve existing spectrometer, radiometer and lidar models. 
This effort involves Matlab or C programming by optimizing existing code. The 
hardware models are developed for Aviation Safety sensor instrumentation.

The student will perform review of existing research on use of satellite data 
for aviation weather product generation/development/usage at present, goal to 
find gaps, determine specific instrument/satellite and/or combinations that 
could be used for aircraft safety.
