Gunfire erupted in several neighborhoods of northern Kyiv on Friday afternoon, in what Ukrainian officials said were clashes with Russian infiltrators. Ukrainian artillery and tanks were moving through the city.

Russian forces that had seized the Hostomel airfield northwest of Kyiv in an airborne assault on Thursday joined Russian armored troops that poured in from Belarus, and after heavy battles were on the forested edge of the capital by Friday morning, Ukrainian soldiers on the front line said.

Nervous troops, including recently enrolled volunteers in civilian dress, were digging in, with Ukrainian artillery and armor dispersed nearby. Ukrainian forces said they were preparing to blow up bridges that lead into Kyiv from the north and the northwest.

Kyiv was hit by a series of Russian airstrikes that shook the city center through the morning after President Vladimir Putin ordered an all-out assault on Ukraine that he said was aimed at toppling the government of Mr. Zelensky and ending Ukraine’s alignment with the West.

A residential high-rise went up in flames after being hit, Ukrainian officials said. Thousands of residents of Kyiv spent the night in underground subway stations that had been converted to bomb shelters.
