- Assuming that you are talking about cast iron skillets, it's pretty easy. First clean the rust off with a good scrub pad or steel wool. Rinse well and dry. Coat the skillet on all sides with cooking oil, making sure that you cover all surfaces, and wipe off any access. Put the skillet in the oven at 350º or higher and let it "cook" for several hours. The surface should turn to a black, almost Teflon like surface. Be prepared for some smoke coming from the oven, so running the stove fan is a good idea. You may have to repeat the process, depending how dried out the cast iron is. I hope this helps.
