Some time back, Jason Collier (C3GPS) came up with what I thought was a great
idea. He proposed that we take our planes, his Piper and my Cessna, to
Huntsville, AL to see Groundspeak’s GPS Adventures Maze at the Rocket and Space
Center there. The exhibit is open from June 2 to something like November 2.
Jason’s plan was simple: day one fly to Huntsville, check out a rental car and
check into a hotel. Day two, see the Rocket and Space Center with the GPS
Adventure Maze exhibit and cache. Day three, cache around the Huntsville area
finding as many as we can. Day four, fly back to St. Louis. Each of our
planes holds a limited number of people so it would be a small group going and
splitting the costs. Well, a couple of things happened. Jason cannot make the
trip until September and I need to go before July 16 if I am going. Also, my
normal caching partner, 2_cats, declined the offer to go for the same reasons
she declined to go to MOGA. She mentioned something about a trip to Italy to
retrieve her daughter costing a lot of money and time off from work. Still, I
would love to go to Huntsville if I can find one or two (at most) cachers
willing to go and help split the costs. The current budget would split the
airplane fuel, rental car, and hotel costs (figuring on a shared hotel room) at
a “worst-case scenario” of no more than $400-450 per person. That figure will
change depending on how many go and the choices made by those going on the
trip. For example, if someone can work a great deal on hotel or rental car
costs, the split cost could be significantly lower. Also, the airplane fuel
costs will NOT be as high as I currently figure, but I always over-estimate
that expense because of a variety of factors. Each person would be responsible
for their own food, museum entrance (I might be able to get us in for free),
and souvenir costs. This will be a special way to do this special cache! It
would be perfect for someone retired or otherwise free to go and willing to
split expenses. I could do the trip just about any time between now and July
16 minus a few already scheduled dates. Please contact me off-list
(BlueBeadMan at gc.com if nothing else) if you are interested in going on the
trip or just want more details. Hope to fly with you soon!
