Dear all,
Department of Environmental Biology and Wildlife Sciences pleased to
announce a seminar on the philosophy of science.
Title of the talk: A Search for a New Philosophy of Biology
Speaker: Prof Anindya Sinha, National Institute of Advanced Studies,
Bangalore and Nature Conservation Foundation, Mysore
Date: 5 December 2016 (Monday)
Time: 1000 h to 1300 h
Venue: Conference Hall, MCB Building, Cotton College
Abstract: Is biology a true ‘science’, with all the necessary attributes of
a genuine science? Or, can it be excluded from science altogether because
it lacks the universality, the law-structuredness, and strictly
quantitative nature of a ‘true’ science? What is the nature of biology as a
discipline and how unique is it in the realm of the natural sciences? In
this talk, I propose to examine the philosophical underpinnings of biology,
touching upon the way science has been conceptualised, methodological
approaches in science and in biology, and various critiques of biology as a
science. I would also particularly discuss the philosophical basis of
conservation biology and the advent of values in a discipline that has its
roots in value-neutral natural science.
Please drop a mail to narayansharma77@xxxxxxxxx if you are interested to
attend it.
Warmest,
Narayan
