I grew up hearing stories about how my Great Grandmother and her daughters fought off raids by native Americans while the men were off riding fences. The natives would wait until the men were gone and attack the "weak" women. The weak women who knew how to use guns very well... My mother could ride, shoot, and take an a dead animal from carcass to dinner all by herself. She did tend to leave the hunting to the men, but I think that was mostly politeness. Women are much more deadly in a fight than men.
