try this...........
stop gdm if it is running........
*sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
*now configure X
*sudo Xorg -configure*
which will create a new *xorg.conf.new *in ur home
directory.........
Backup the original *xorg.conf* and copy the new one to */etc/X11/xorg.conf*
Now start the gdm
*sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start*
