Here are some instructions that worked with 9.04.. have not tried on karmic,
but looks like they should..
sudo apt-get install build-essential
wget http://ftp.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/tiwai/snapshot/\
alsa-driver-unstable-snapshot.tar.bz2 -O -| tar xvj
cd alsa-driver-unstable
./configure --enable-dynamic-minors
make
sudo make install-modules
echo "options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6" | \
sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
