The Suffolk Legislature Consumer Protection Committee just concluded its
hearing on the bill against immigrants, IR 1105. The hearing went extremely
well for those who support human rights, but before I go into what
transpired, we all need to go and testify at the full Legislature's public
hearing on the bill this Tuesday March 4 beginning at 9:30 AM.

When I walked into the Leg I was surprised that in addition to the five
members of the committee, most of the rest of the legislators, or their
aides, were there for the hearing. All twelve speakers were against the
bill. There was not a single speaker in favor of it!
The contractors were well represented and they talked about the burder the
bill would put on business. Milan Bhatt of the New York Immigration
Coalition exposed the pretense that the bill was pro worker. If Suffolk was
serious about working conditions, it would increase protections for
immigrant workers instead of taking them away, he said.
Labor leader Michelle Lynch of 1199 was great. She told the legislators that
bills attacking immigrants idle one of our strongest economic engines, the
contribution of immigrants.
The speakers were followed by questioning of the County Consumer Affairs
Commissioner. He admitted that his agency did not have the staff, the
expertise, or the knowledge to enforce the proposed law, and he had no
estimates for how much the bill would cost a county facing a $150 million
deficit.
Legislator Barraga earned the applause of the audience when he said that
undocumented immigrants are part of the economic base of the United States
and warned that with the country facing recession, the county had more
important issues to address than the poorly conceived bill before it.
By our count, it seems like we may have enough voted to kill the bill.
Unfortunately there is still a public hearing on it scheduled for this
Tuesday at 9:30 at the Legislative building in Hauppague. Fortunately this
gives us a chance to publically thank legislators like Mystal, Barraga,
Browning who are standing up to the haters and to take Levy, Eddington, and
Beedenbender to task. We should not let this opportunity slip from our
hands. We need to see everyone there Tuesday.
