***This is a message from a member of Friends of Students for 60,000*** dear friends, at last night's meeting, several fundraising ideas were discussed. the coffers are waning and no event has been held for more than a year. because of our limited active membership in the northport area, it was deemed difficult to present another dinner such as the one held at the thatched cottage. the main problem is going door to door to ask for donations for a silent or chinese auction. pete white said he will check out doing an oldies concert, a fundraiser that has been successful for students for 60,000 in years past. another idea was to tap into the existing facebook network of former members of students, which numbers over 500 names at present. it may be possible to draw in a far larger number of them, many of whom are now out of college and are gainfully employed. a letter will be facebooked to them to tell about what friends is doing, urge them to get active on behalf of the poor, and ask for financial assistance on an annual basis. pete reports that paperwork to create three chapters should be on the way to the irs soon. the chapters would be northeast, virginia and florida, reflecting campus groups that have been active. other chapters can be added later. one advantage of the chapter system is that each would be responsible for its own funds, but donations would continue to be tax-deductible under the friends umbrella. chapters would have to adhere to rules that govern friends' activities. friends recently gave $3,000 to the government of telica for a study of how to provide water to three communities, including nuevo amanecer. the study, which was supposed to be finished jan. 15, wound up costing more, which telica will cover when its new budget year begins feb. 15. so the report is now expected in early march. joann moran is attempting to reach northport little league officials to ask for donations of funds or equipment for the "field of dreams" project in chacraseca. pete proposes to send letters to major league players to ask for help. a separate freelist message will request donations for earthquake relief in haiti. *** You can unsubscribe from this list by sending an email to fsf60k-request@xxxxxxxxxxxxx with 'unsubscribe' in the subject field.
