In 2005, Colombia’snew “Commission for Peace and Justice” startedgathering
evidence about the horrific violence carried out by illegalparamilitary groups.
A highly controversial justice and peace process wasdesigned to allow
paramilitary leaders to hand in their weapons and givethemselves up voluntarily
in exchange for reduced sentences. Impunity documents the hearings in
whichparamilitary commanders, such as “HH” describe atrocities theyhave
committed in detail, as the families of their victims listenand watch on
projected screens. Through a series of commissiontestimonies, footage of
paramilitary crimes, and interviews with victimsand experts, Impunity shines a
light on the brutalhistory of paramilitary violence. Yet due to serious
irregularities in thejustice and peace process, many families express their
fear that they willnever know the truth surrounding the deaths of their loved
ones, and thatthe perpetrators will escape punishment. In an era where many
countries aretempted to sacrifice justice in the name of “peace”, whathappens
in Colombiawill resonate beyond its borders.

Impunityis a stunning documentary examining Colombia's
paramilitarydemobilization process and its impact on hundreds of thousands of
victims ofviolence. In 2005, the Colombian Congress passed law 975, the Justice
and Peacelaw, which created terms for the demobilization of the
country'sparamilitaries, and the construction of a reconciliation process. The
processhas been criticized by human rights organizations inside and outside of
Colombia, whocontend that the terms of the law are too favorable to
perpetrators, offer toolittle to victims, and have allowed paramilitary
structures to continue intact. This film examines the law, six years after its
implementation, and its impactson Colombian civil society. Impunity has
received awards in France and Switzerland, including a specialmention from the
World Organization Against Torture.
