Why does a county government want to spend county tax dollars to insure that
federal and state payroll taxes will be collected from building contractors?
Remember the film "Caine Mutiny"? Doesn't Captain Queeg's obsession with
the missing frozen strawberries come to mind?

MONTANO CONDEMNS WASTE OF TAXPAYER'S DOLLAR$$$$
Central Islip - Suffolk County Legislator Ricardo Montano, (D-Central Islip)
blasted the County Legislature and the County Attorney's office for
frivolously wasting taxpayer's dollars to appeal a lawsuit that was already
scheduled for a hearing on Thursday, May 15, 2008 in Riverhead.
On Tuesday, April 29, 2008, New York State Supreme Court Justice Carol
MacKenzie granted a Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) against the
Legislature and William J. Lindsay, Presiding Officer, which halted the
Legislature from voting on Introductory Resolution 1105-2008. Justice
MacKenzie agreed that the Rules of the Legislature were violated when the
bill was improperly discharged from the Consumer Protection Committee.
Today Legislator Montano received notice that the County Attorney authorized
the hiring of the high-powered and high-priced law firm of Beckman, Henoch,
Peterson & Petty located in Garden City. Lawyers from the firm will try to
persuade the New York State Appellate Division in Brooklyn to lift the TRO
at a hearing tomorrow at 2:00 pm.
Montano said, "With the state of the economy in or near recession, and
Suffolk County leading the State in home foreclosures, we should be spending
our time and resources addressing these issues." He added, "The County
Attorney's office and the Levy Administration should be concentrating on
trying to get contract agencies their contracts and payments on time,
instead of using the public funds on outside law firms and consultants.

1) This bill would be an economic disaster: it threatens both one of our
most vulnerable economic sectors - housing - and tries to idle one of our
strongest economic engines - the economic contributions of immigrants.
2) Home construction costs will rise as contractors are forced to pay the
costs of immigration enforcement which the federal government should be
paying. They also get to wonder whether needed projects will go unfinished
as contractors are driven out of business.
3) This is happening against a backdrop of tough economic times, and a down
housing economy. Adding insult to injury is not the way Suffolk County's
leaders can help us stay out of recession.
4) Voters have been clear: They want solutions to our immigration challenges
that help everybody win: a path to citizenship for those who work hard,
follow the rules, pay taxes, and learn English.
5) If Suffolk were serious about improving the lives of workers, they'd be
talking about enforcing minimum wage and overtime pay laws - not punishing
hard-working immigrants and saddling taxpayers with the bill.
6) Washington needs to step in and take some action so individual
jurisdictions are not forced to pick up the slack, at their own expense. We
need comprehensive immigration reform now.
