FUNERAL FOR MARCELLO LUCERO
The Congregational Church of Patchogue will be the site of services for
Marcello Lucero this Saturday, Nov. 15th. Viewing is from 5 until 7PM. The
funeral begins at 7PM. The Congregational Church of Patchogue is located at
95 East Main Street in Patchogue.
There will be a vigil to protest his senseless slaughter and to grieve with
the Lucero family and with one another tomorrow evening, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m.,
sponsored by the LI Immigrant Alliance at the Patchogue railroad station,
the site of the slaying. Here is the LICC's statement on his tragic death:
"Recently Marcello Lucero was attacked and killed in Patchogue by a group of
thugs. While those who have been arrested should be presumed innocent until
proven guilty, it seems that the only offense committed by Lucero and his
friend was the color of their skin. In assaulting these two unarmed men,
this gang of cowards betrayed everything that America stands for and that
the good people of Patchogue have worked so hard to build in their
community. It is particularly tragic that this occurred just before our
nation prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving. Imagine where we would be today
if Massasoit and his people had hunted down the Pilgrims.
"We condemn this brutal attack and pledge ourselves to work for liberty and
justice for all. We applaud the generosity of the Rev. Dwight Wolter, pastor
of Patchogue Congregational Church, and the Suffolk Association of the
United Church of Christ, in helping the family of Marcello Lucero to bury
him, giving him in death the respect he should have received in life.
"Last week's election shows that most Americans are ready to judge a
candidate for president on the basis of his policies and the content of his
character, rather than his race. The cruel assault this week shows that we
still have some distance to go toward becoming the beloved community that
God intends for us to be, one that is truly the land of the free and the
home of the brave
