1080 Miles for a Good Cause

Almost 400 supporters walked more than 1080 miles
to bridge two communities in one of the most successful events of the year.

--------------------------------------------------
Students of Miami Dade College’s IF Club, which
raises funds and awareness to support Tengo un Sueño at both the InterAmerican
and Kendall campuses, organized their second Walk2Nicaragua campaign. Leading
up to the walk-a-thon, which took place on March 2 at the Kendall Campus track,
students wrote persuasive texts based on presentations by Rosa Ojeda, the
principal of the school that IF supports in Nicaragua, and created webpages to
promote the program. Some students secured financial sponsorship in exchange
for laps around the track.

                              Between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., about 300 community
members accumulated 1080 miles---the distance between Miami and
Chacraseca---that represented a symbolic bridging of the two communities.
Supporters of all ages walked, ran, and even pushed baby strollers as a
volunteer DJ pumped out music and shouted words of encouragement through the
speakers. Even the MDC women’s softball team noticed the excitement and offered
to do their pre-practice warm-up jog for a good cause.

At the same time, about 100 people in Chacraseca
got up at 6 a.m. to contribute to the miles goal, adding 469 more. Students at
MAST academy who were inspired by Rosa’s presentation also ran in solidarity
along the Rickenbacker Causeway in Key Biscayne. Fellows of the National
Hispana Leadership Institute 2012 Executive Leadership Program held in
California gathered in San Juan Bautista and also walked in solidarity.

Since it launched in February, the online
campaign has gained more than 400 supporters and 100 donors. You can still help
us reach our mid-year fundraising goal of $10,000 at

                              Chacraseca Principal Visits Miami
It has been an eventful three months at
Imagination Federation, highlighted by the visit to Miami of one of the most
important people in our family. Rosa Ojeda is the principal of the Maryknoll
School in Chacraseca, Nicaragua that the 33 children in our Tengo un Sueño
program attend. She was in Miami for four weeks in February and March giving
some 50 presentations about the program to students and South Florida allies.
Her student audiences ranged from elementary to graduate, including Miami Dade
College, Florida International University, the University of Miami, Miami Beach
High, MAST Academy and South Pointe Elementary.

“We see education as the only true way for our
community to make progress,” Rosa told a class of writing students at the Miami
Dade College InterAmerican Campus. “We see these 33 children as future doctors,
nurses, and professionals, and we hope to see them stay and help their
community.”

                              IF Chair Honored
The kind of hard work that makes events like
Walk2Nicaragua possible has been recognized in the last few months as our Chair
and Co-Founder, Emily A. Sendin, has received several prestigious honors. In
January, the National Hispana Leadership Institute named her an Executive
Leadership Program Fellow, inviting her to participate in a 9-month program
with 15 other exemplary Latina leaders from across the country. In April, the
Center for Community Involvement at Miami Dade College named her
Service-Learning Faculty Member of the Year for the InterAmerican campus,
recognizing her not only for her work connecting students to IF, but also her
decade-long track record for promoting civic engagement through countless
projects and courses.

Emily has also received one of the most
prestigious honors for any professor, a Fulbright grant. During her tenure as a
Fulbright Scholar, Emily plans to spend 9 months to a year in Nicaragua working
to establish service-learning initiatives with UNAN-Leon, the closest public
university to Chacraseca, and continuing to grow Tengo un Sueño. This honor is
a testament to Emily’s unique gifts, and a great opportunity to further the
work of Imagination Federation.

We are very proud of our Chair!

                        The Imagination Federation is a 501(c)3 non-profit
organization that consists of faculty, students and community organizers in the
U.S. and Nicaragua working to create lasting partnerships between the two
countries. Our goal is to bring greater educational opportunities to students
of the rural Nicaraguan community of Chacraseca and raise awareness about
issues of global poverty in the United States. More broadly, we imagine and
call into being a world where children everywhere have access to the basic
human rights that honor their full potential.
