MLK LAB UPDATE -------------- On Tuesday, spent the day at the MLK center, working on a proposal for it's future use. When director Joe Frye came in at about 4 PM he looked at my proposal and then showed me some grant guidelines he just received from the United Way of LaPorte County. He asked me to work on all the technical details, and he would help with demographical information and things related to the center. I am asking for is a high bandwidth Internet connection, called AT&T they want 199.95 for installation, plus that is also the monthly fee. Contacted some DSL providers (Verizon and Earthlink) they have not gotten back to me yet. Also including money for more RAM, wondering if I should include money for sound cards and headphones? In effort to keep cost down, this is not a major concern to me, and would just rather wait for the donations to come in. Including money for membership to ctcnet.org they ask for $100 + the fee for their conference in June is $220 Also want money for things like paper, ink cartridges, binders to make manuals ... anything else? Possibly a little money to replace broken keyboards or mice. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ***Important Meeting*** ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We have until Jan. 20 to submit the grant, on the Tuesday the 7th at 5PM CST we are going to be meeting at the Center to go over the grant, and generally set the agenda for 2003. Richard is going to attend and wants to learn more about linux, and has also agreed to be a lab assistant, and supervise lab use up to 3 times a week. I am going to take tutorials on the net and also some notes from a FREE GEEK class, and put together a bash manual for him. FREE GEEK MICHIANA STUFF ----------------------- Had a good meeting last night at the Sal Army, Tom and Mike helped me with some ideas for the grant. I feel it will be beneficial for FGM, since they will be a supporting group to the lab. Here is some info about an interesting project going on in Portland which I am going to respong to: About the php/database and programming project: Okay, this is the interesting bit, and it's been touched on before. For the beginning of next year, Richard is setting up a class on php and databases - but it's so much more than just a class. Students (at several different skill levels) will be reworking the FREE GEEK database interface in php (it's currently in Java) as a class project. This will make it also a lesson in working on others' code and on Free Software projects in general. In addition to workshop sessions, several lecture/symposium sessions are being considered as supplementary material, to be of interest to people who perhaps already know some php but want to know more about the whole picture. Potential topics: using CVS, effective documentation? This is where experienced Free Software programmers can really help out. The end results: a class that teaches people skills they can use. a database that would be more accessable (and customizable) to other freegeek like projects elsewhere. a database that works better. Before that can happen: Richard will be analyzing the database, splitting it into chunks, some of which can (hopefully) be tackled by people in the class. There should probably be a brainstorm (possibly by the coders group) of lecture topics and ways to organize this class/project. Dates and goals need to be enumerated more clearly. And someone with more experience with php would be useful as a co-teacher. So. That's the status of that project. Please! Pipe up if you'd like to help!
