Promise IDE raid controller under linux = slow FYI

I built about four boxes like this and I won't do so again. If I'm doing
IDE raid and I need something of a reasonable speed I'll use a 3ware IDE
raid controller. Just my two cents.

Why is Promise slow? Because it does it's mirroring in software and then
does TWO separate writes. It also tends to only read from a single disk
too, it doesn't have much intelligences for T/S/H positioning when it
-knows- what is coming up for reading from both disks. Think of it as the
WIN-modem of IDE raid controllers -- ie it has no real functional firmware
of its own, it only does what the software driver tells it. 3ware by
contrast does a lot of neato stuff in the hardware.

        Mike
