In windows:

In Windows NT, the HOSTS file is for TCP/IP utilities, and the LMHOSTS file is
for LAN Manager NET utilities. If you cannot PING another computer (using a
friendly name), check the HOSTS file. If you cannot NET VIEW a server using
only the TCP/IP protocol, check the LMHOSTS file.

Subject: [foxboro] hosts vs. lmhosts files
Folks,
What is the difference and purpose of these 2 files on a UNIX V6.3 System and
ditto for a WinNT V6.4 System, if it matters (I don't think it does but.)?
Whenever I added 2nd Network cards for the Corporate connections all I ever did
was edit the hosts files, never the lmhosts files. The folks at this plant are
editing the lmhosts files; why, what is the different function of the 2 files?
Ditto for Foxray, adding the IP address to the AWs I just edited the hosts
files.
Just curious.
