Hi Terrence, The IA font problem only appears when you are viewing remote draw apps or the old Display Manager, not FoxView itself. I don't use AW70s, so I have no idea whether there is an issue them as well. I typically run FoxView on a 22 inch monitor at 1680 X 1050 in TrueColor mode using Exceed 5 or 6 at home and it looks great (& BIG). But when I start the ICC or legacy historian or any of the other remote draw apps I have to leave them at their default window size or I lose the menu arrows. This is not a huge problem for me because I know which arrow is which after years of using Exceed on PCs that don't have the IA font installed on them. When I access my older IA system that uses the legacy Display Manager it is quite a different story. The old DM uses the IA font for all of the drop down menu arrows, and our displays make extensive use of the IA markers. It is the IA font that doesn't scale at the larger window sizes. The IA font problem was a little embarrassing the first time it happened on our Plant Manager's new 24 inch PC monitor, but we have adjusted. It is not a show-stopper by any means, so I have not invested any time in looking for a fix. Most of the Exceed users are still using Windows 95 or NT at 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. My Windows 3.11 machines are happily running the old DM at 640 x 480. I used to run at 1024 x 768 and never noticed the problem at all, but any higher resolution I have tested has the same problem. The normal Exceed installed fonts scale ok & they look good at full screen, but the IA font that is used for the Up & Down menu arrows and quite a few markers on our displays disappears. The font that is displayed instead is the one that is used if you open up a DM without having installed the IA font on your PC. Reducing the size of the window does not bring the IA font back. It is annoying, but not catastrophic. I just have to remember not to maximize the old DM window. We have not experienced the issue with the higher resolution monitors, however we do set the properties to run in the 256 color mode so that we can see the alarm pages. It does mess up the colors somewhat, but the fonts stay the same and we are able to run the DM full screen. I wonder if it is a difference in the versions of exceed or in the startup scripts that we run? Fonts & colors are the biggest headache I have to deal with, and I have found Ron Deen's Xterm manual to be invaluable. It is on the Cassandra Web site at: http://www.thecassandraproject.org/archive.html I get the best results by having only three fonts installed on the PCs that are only looking at FoxView and have them in this order: K P misc K P 75dpi K P 100dpi For PCs that also look at the legacy Display Manager I also have: L P ia loaded at the top of the list. Uncheck "Automatic Font Substitution", and cross your fingers. Having additional fonts installed sometimes leads to very odd displays on different PCs - some never use them but others will. Another odd thing we found when we started using larger resolution monitors with Exceed is that the old Display Managers will only allow you to increase the window size to a certain point before it quits using the "ia" font. =3D3D20 =3D3D20 Once this happens you can't get the font back until you shutdown the display and restart it. How do you typically invoke a FoxView from the Xstart icon on the remote PC? I haven't worked with Exceed since FoxView came out, so I've never had to do that before. The way it is set up here is that they log in as root, use REXEC, and run "/bin/sh /pathname/runFV name_of_remotePC" in the Xstart Command field. The file "runFV" is a modified version of another file called "runDM" that successfully starts a DM with the correct fonts. All I did was change one line in that file, the one that says "/usr/fox/wp/bin/dm_wp50" and changed it to "/opt/fox/wp/FoxView/foxview". As I mentioned earlier, a FoxView appears on the remote PC, but the fonts aren't right. I copied fontdef.dat around to pretty much every place imaginable, so I don't think that is the problem. I think I am being too simplistic in invoking the FoxView. I think I need to use some other script that actually is tailored for all of FoxView's quirks, but I have no idea what that is, and I can't find it on the web site or Cassandra. Can anybody help? =3D3D20 Tim Lowell Control Systems Engineer Tesoro Corporation (office) 210-283-2929 (mobile) 210-253-0225 tlowell@xxxxxxxxxxx * * This e-mail and any files transmitted with it are the property of ASARCO LLC and/or its affiliates, are confidential, and are intended solely for the use of the individual or entity to whom this e-mail is addressed.
