That's not too difficult:

On your main graphic, have a button that opens your 'open/close/confirm' or
whatever overlay AND sets a reletive pick like this:
set relative pick := PICK1 YOURCOMPOUND:YOURBLOCK ; = P2 YOURPOINT ; = P3
YOUROTHERPOINT

Now on your overlay you can make all sorts of buttons like this:
The OPEN BUTTON: mometary Contact $PICK1.$P2
The CLOSE BUTTON: mometary Contact $PICK1.$P3
or 
The Confirm BUTTON: toggle $PICK1.$P2
etc,etc.

The CANCEL BUTTON sould only be a 'close overlay' sort of thing.

I am looking for a generic method to create a confirm/cancel overlay, to
ensure two clicks for each start/stop command.
I remember that this was a requirement in power stations applications. I
hope those who have anything of the like, can help me out here.
