Stan,

In a variety of ways. From memory (I last worked on this in March),
depending on the AW and/or the tape, I would get tons of errors and fsck
issues during the restore process; each was different, although there were
repeated patterns. But even when the restore procedure appeared to restore
successfully (no errors and fsck issues), the AWs would not boot
successfully; again tons of errors and fsck issues showed up during the boot
process. I finally gave up and ran out of time...

Sean,

Regarding...
Foxboro released a mirror backup script that un-mirrors the drive then backs
up to tape the un-mirrored drive without the need to shut down a box.

OMG, that would be a God-send. This is what I found via the GCS search
engine but it is definitely slooooooooow to respond today...
HH1020 AIT tape drive backup with mirrored drives - Assuming that the tape
is seen in the tape drive using the find_tape command. This will be done
automatically with the backup _ mirror script , which is on the QF991274D.
This script takes the drive on secondary SCSI bus off-line and backs this
drive to tape.

Regarding...
Why don't your tapes work though?

Good question, I wish I could figure it out. I spent weeks earlier this
year trying to perform a restore function from the Production System AW51E
backup streaming tapes (multiple dates, multiple tapes, multiple AWs) to the
Test Bed AW51E (multiple AWs) with no success. Speculation is that the
backup tapes are not any good (all of them?); one reason why is that it
appears Foxboro changed the backup procedure mid-1990s and we were still
using the old procedure. However, we have since tried to get backup
streaming tapes on 2 occasions using the new procedure but they would not
restore either. Soooooooooooooo, I have no idea why, but your reference to
the mirror backup script that un-mirrors the drive then backs up to tape the
un-mirrored drive without the need to shut down a box may be our
backup/restore Plan B. I will try it but...

I notice that the referenced HH and QF are dated 2003, well before Foxboro
revised the procedure mid-1990s. So I am wondering if it is a valid tool
anymore. Any ideas?

Either way, thanks for the lead...

Hi,

* Is there a command to un-mirror the Production System AW51E external
hard drives 1st, or can I simply power down the secondary drive and move it
to the Test Bed AW51E and use it as the primary drive?
Yes, dft unmirror_sys Have a read of B0193ND it has some good information
on mirrored drives. Foxboro released a mirror backup script that unmirrors
the drive then backs up to tape the unmirrored drive with out the need to
shut down a box.

Why don't your tapes work though?

UNIX folks,
I have a Production System Node with an AW51E V6.3 with external mirrored
hard drives (P0918BM 18.2GB), and a duplicate Test Bed Node; yes, they were
legally purchased and licensed. I have had no luck restoring the backup
tapes from the Production System AW51E to the Test Bed AW51E. Plan B being
considered is to move one of the mirrored drives (secondary) from the
Production System AW51E to the Test Bed AW51E (primary) and reboot from it.
I could then add a 2nd drive to each AW51E and re-mirror them. Am I
dreaming or can I get this to work? Questions:
* Is there a command to un-mirror the Production System AW51E external
hard drives 1st, or can I simply power down the secondary drive and move it
to the Test Bed AW51E and use it as the primary drive?
* I believe there is a partition created on one or both drives (?)
that automatically handles the mirroring tasks. Is it created on both
drives?

Just checking in with the list for advice on how to proceed if this is a
workable solution.

PS. Just so no one thinks I have gone mad, this concept worked perfectly
well on the Windows-NT Nodes.

Thanks in advance.
