[foxboro] Send mail from Solaris through firewall

I've spent a good part of three days banging my head against the (fire)wall
on this issue. Please help me before the blood soaks everything.

The situation: AW-D running Solaris 2.5.1 and sendmail 8.6, you know the
ancient version on the stock Sun boxes. I configured /etc/mail/sendmail.cf
years ago to send mail from this Sun box to the corporate e-mail and it's
been working all these years. Recently, we moved all these Sun boxes to
behind a fortified firewall, so fortified that even with a known relay mail
server, I have not been able to send mail to my desktop.

Previously, these are the only edits in my sendmail.cf (with
sendmail.cf.orig being the plain vanilla, stock sendmail.cf that came with
the software install), and it worked splendidly to send system status
reports to my corporate e-mail account:

04AW01# cd /etc/mail
04AW01# diff sendmail.cf.orig sendmail.cf
21c21

I searched the freelists.org archive and found an excellent write up by
Sven Audenaert (thanks, Sven!) from Sept 2006 (
//www.freelists.org/post/foxboro/foxboro-Sendmail-error,2). Following
Sven's procedure, I added the mail relay in the hosts file, also calling it
"mailhost",  and edited sendmail.cf accordingly. But that's where my
progress stopped.

Here's what I try to accomplish:

  04AW01   --->   mailhost   --->   smtp.dowcorning.net
originating     relay server       SMTP server destination

My new sendmail.cf (with sendmail.cf.orig being the plain vanilla, stock
sendmail.cf that came with the software install):

04AW01# diff sendmail.cf.orig sendmail.cf
21c21
< Dj$w.$m
---
Dj04AW01.dowcorning.net
24c24
< DMether
---
DMmailhost

The most relevant part of sendmail.cf:

# my official hostname
Dj04AW01.dowcorning.net

# major relay mailer
DMmailhost

# major relay host
DRmailhost
CRmailhost

Yes, I stopped and started the sendmail daemon as needed after editing
sendmail.cf

When I try to run the test as in Sven's procedure, sendmail just hangs and
times out after 3 minutes or so.


Question: How do I specify the relay host in sendmail.cf to allow me to
send mail through it to the corporate mail server?

Thanks in advance for all the help. And I really need all the help at this
point.
