Hi
Many of you may be aware about my perennial questions and quest for a
decent open source Linux Accounting software - esp one that is relevant to
India
One software that has been under development for some time and is now
deployable is gnukhata
the latest installer is available here http://gnukhata.in
Ubuntu and Linux Mint are supported best while there is an option to
install to other Linux OS' as well.
The developers are hoping that gnukhata will be pushed (and i suppose
accepted) in Debian / Ubuntu repos soon,.
I have been using gnukhata for a few weeks now and I would say that the
current version is pretty good and definitely deployable for personal use
and for small offices and organizations.
Again from developer information there is rapid progress on many more of
the added elements and later versions would cover a wide range of an
organizations financial accounting and reporting requirements.
*Feedback on Using*
This is the first computerized accounting system I am using so have nothing
to compare with. And my experience is limited to a few weeks (actually a
couple days over a few weeks and about 30 entries)
*Installation* - If the preferred OS (Ubuntu) is used there are no
installation issues. If others are used there seem to be some issues where
the install happens and gnukhata may or may not work. My installation
experience is limited to Linux Mint 17.1 and 17.3 - It worked in two and
needed some tweaking in the other two.
In the one i am using, for testing, after system updates gnukhata has
stopped working,
The software is provided through docker containers
There are off line and on line installers - and presently an update pack
*Working*
Anyone familiar with the double entry system of accounts would be at ease
with the software. Further anyone experienced with normal computing
applications and form filling experiences (drop down boxes,customizing
master files etc) would also be able to use this easily.
A caveat here is that any type of digitized / computer based accounting
needs a well thought out Chart of Accounts - the more comprehensive and
thought out this is, at the outset, the easier it would be for the users
later on.
*Data*
At present it seems that the data is not transferable. This maybe a fairly
big issue. From limited experience of auditors and tally it seems that one
of the best facets of Tally is the easy transferability of Tally Accounts -
some kind of copy and sending of Tally work files. Why this is important is
because the ssers and auditors can exchange the work files over the net
without having access to the physical computer on which the software is
based
Am unsure of data back up and will report on that soon .
*Support*
The developers list is very active and Krishnakant ji is very active and
prompt in replying to queries, For some queries the other developers also
contribute. The project has a Senior Chartered Accountant as a domain
expert and it makes a world of difference to understanding the system.
