The main news in this update is the report from the Flora of Nepal meeting held
at NAST on 23rd November. Thanks to Dr Shandesh Bhattarai for preparing the
report below.
We all look forward to working with the new Flora of Nepal National Steering

BOTANISTS GATHERING IN NAST

The gathering of the botanists (who are working in the flora of Nepal project
and can contribute in the upcoming volumes of the flora of Nepal) was held on
November 23, 2012 at the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST),
Khumaltar, Kathmandu Nepal. The botanists' gathering/meeting was chaired by
NAST vice chancellor, Prof. Dr. Surendra Raj Kafle. A total of 25 participants
were present in the meeting representing the Department of Plant Resources
(DPR), Tribhuvan University (TU), and Nepal Academy of Science and Technology
(NAST). NAST also invited some freelance senior botanists in the meeting.

DECISIONS MADE
1. Publication and work related to Volume 10 and 1
Prof. SR Kafle opened the meeting by saying that flora of Nepal publication is
not only the interest of NAST, TU, and DPR but also closely linked with the
interest of our nation. Therefore, the publication work related to the Volume
10 and 1 should be very fast. He requested all the national collaborators to
take this attempt honestly and resolute to work jointly to publish the volume
10 and 1 within the given deadlines.
Prof. KK Shrestha requested vice chancellor to put Dr. KR Rajbhandary in NAST
in the position of a Project Officer for the publication of Volume 10. The
proposal of Shrestha was supported by Dr. Annapurna Das, Dr. Khem Raj
Bhattarai, Surej Ketan Dhungana of DPR and other participants. The vice
chancellor of NAST explained that he has already welcomed Dr. Rajbhandary in
NAST in the previous Flora of Nepal meetings. He again requested Dr.
Rajbhandary to come to NAST and play a leadership role for the publication of
the Volume 10.
2. Flora of Nepal National Steering Committee
Prof. SR Kafle briefly explained about the formation of eight members new flora
of Nepal national steering committee (see table 1). He clerified that the
steering comittee was reformed in the sense that the newly formed steering
committee members will honestly contribute personally and on behalf of their
institution to publish the upcoming volumes of the flora of Nepal timely. He
also informed that the first flora of Nepal national steering committee meeting
was held on October 12, 2012 in NAST. Prof. Chaudhary suggested better to
clerify the role of steering committee and other committees of the flora of
Nepal, so that the work of the flora of Nepal can go ahead smoothly and timely.

3. Publication of Flora of Nepal Volume 3 Nepal Edition
Dr. Tirtha Bahadur Shrestha raised a question regarding the publication of the
flora of Nepal Volume 3 Nepal edition which was scheduled and decided to be
published by June 2012. Prof. Kafle explained that the money for the
publication was provided by the MoFSC and already deposited in CDB, TU bank
account. He also clarified that the MoFSC asked NAST by sending a letter to
know the view of NAST for the deposition of the money to the CDB, TU bank
account. After sending the letter by NAST to MoFSC for the deposition of the
money to the CDB TU account, MoFSC sent the money to the CDB, TU account for
the publication of Volume 3 Nepal edition. At last, Prof. Kafle requested Prof.
KK Shrestha, Prof. PK Jha, Dr. Annapurna Das to sit together in his presence
and discuss on the matter very seriously.
4. Flora of Nepal National Meeting
Dr. Annapurna Das suggested NAST authority to organize a second meeting of the
flora of Nepal to discuss about the work (completed and the work to be started)
and work division related to the flora of Nepal (especially the VOLUME 10 PART
I (Palmae to Zingiberaceae) and VOLUME 10 PART II (Orchidaceae). The proposal
was accepted by the NAST vice chancellor. He also suggested to invite the flora
of Nepal national steering committee members, editorial board members,
botanists (taxonomists), and other experts (who are contributing and can
contribute in the the VOLUME 10 and other upcoming volumes of the Flora of
Nepal) in the meeting. The meeting was scheduled for November 27, 2102,
Tuesday, at 11:00 AM in NAST
5. Miscellaneous
(a) Incentives for the contributors
This is a third time request made by Prof. SR Kafle to the editorial board
members for the tentative identification of the nominal amount of incentives to
be given for the contributors of Volume 10. He put forward NAST past actions
and efforts done in collecting funds for incentives. To identify the tentative
amount of incentives, he requested the editors to identify the total number of
contributors, number of families, numbers of genera and number of species and a
nominal amount of incentives for each contributor as soon as possible.
Prof. Dr. Mohan siwakoti also explained that, we should allocate/generate some
funds for incentives for the contributors because the contributors must also
visit other herbaria for their research. At last Prof. SR Kafle said that NAST
will certainly provide some incentives by any means to the contributors. He
explained that he had requested many times to the Government of Nepal and will
do request in the coming days for the financial support for the Flora of Nepal
project.
(b) Flora of Nepal Editorial Board (Nepal)
Prof. SR Kafle clearly explained that the two editors (Prof. KK Shrestha and
Dr. KR Rajbhandary) will continue their Nepal work. He said that even he cannot
change the editors by his personal interest. But, he said that DPR, TU and NAST
in the aspects of institutional interest about the change and continuation of
the work of the editorial board members will be discussed in detail in the
upcoming editorial board meeting in June 15, 2012. Prof. Chaudhary said that we
should think to widen the editorship. He requested the editors to teach other
collegues for their capacity building.
(c) Work related to Volume 1
Prof. Kafle said the editors to give coordination role of Nepal work of volume
1 among one of the three associate editors as soon as possible so that the work
will get published in the given dadeline.
