To our conservation partners,

A coalition of organizations working on a national Keep It In The Ground
campaign requests the signature of your organization's CEO on a letter
calling on President Obama to use his executive authority to stop new
federal leases of publicly owned fossil fuels.

The letter, including its current signers, are attached alongside a
supporting reference document. It notes the significant contribution of
federal leasing programs to U.S and global greenhouse gas emissions, and
discusses how the cost of continuing these programs to our land, climate and
communities is too high. It already includes support from several
environmental organizations in addition to Winona LaDuke, Dr. Michael Mann,
Bill McKibben, and Dr. Stuart Pimm. This web-form can be used to sign the
letter:

Existing federal laws, including the Mineral Leasing Act, Outer Continental
Shelf Lands Act, Federal Land Policy and Management Act, and Surface Mining
Control and Reclamation Act, give President Obama authority to stop new
federal leasing of fossil fuels. Such action could keep up to 450 billion
tons of potential greenhouse gas pollution safely in the ground, and set an
important precedent in the global climate fight. Stopping new federal fossil
fuel leasing would also help safeguard our air and water, improve community
health, and secure the legacy of our public lands and waters from being lost
to fossil fuel industrialization.

The letter's timing comes at a critical junction for the climate movement.
In 2014, more than 400,000 people mobilized in the streets of New York to
call for global action on climate and the campaign over the Keystone XL
pipeline has delayed the pipeline for over six years. It also comes as
world leaders are preparing for this winter's climate negotiations in Paris;
a commitment by the President to stop new federal fossil fuel leasing would
be a strong show of global climate leadership by the U.S., and would
challenge other nations to follow suit. With this great momentum, the time
to campaign for President Obama to stop federal leasing for publicly owned
fossil fuels is now.

Our coalition is soliciting sign-ons through the end of August.
