The bottom picture is exactly the same picture as the top picture with grid superimposed on it.  With the grid you can see the beams are straight and level across the picture.  But you are right about the segment pairs being slightly askew creating the illusion.

Are those horizontal beams straight and level, or are they tilted?  Are you sure? Take another look.
